Our trainers are highly skilled and come from a wide variety of circus, arts, performance, dance, gymnastics and fitness backgrounds. They are all first aid trained. We have the pleasure of having a dynamic trainer team that changes throughout the year – here are some of our regulars.

Rosalie Ducharme

After earning her degree at Montreal’s National Circus School in 2009, Rosalie performed her duo trapeze act in Cirque du Soleil’s Totem from its creation until 2012. Co-created with her trapeze partner Louis-David Simoneau, their act has been greatly noticed for bringing a whole new style to this discipline, blending high level technique and surprising transitions with flowing choreography and acting.

With a strong background in rhythmic gymnastics and contemporary dance, her understanding of the body movement through the air allows her to constantly imagine new flowing possibilities and shapes.

Sophia O'Connor

Sophia's background in dance and team sport has heavily influenced her style and creation process. She enjoys finding new and interesting movement pathways and creating surprises for the audience.

Since graduating from the New Zealand Circus School, she has created, produced and performed in her own show, The Composer, and others around Wellington including the World of Wearable art awards show and Highlight Carnival of Lights.

She has been teaching since 2015 at the Wellington Circus Hub. Here, she teaches all ages in acrobatics and aerials. Her main specialty disciplines are group acrobatics, handbalance, aerial hoop and trapeze. She runs the Wellington Youth Circus program and is passionate about helping young performers realise their potential and achieve their goals.

Richard Martin

Rich joined the Wellington Circus family in 2013, and quickly became consumed by it. Becoming a trainer allowed him to spend even more time at the hub, and to share his circus passion and creative oddities with others.

He teaches everyone form kids to adult beginners, and continues to train at the Wellington Circus Trust to learn new skills and techniques

Specialising in Duo Trapeze, he has been performing since 2016, and likes nothing more than hanging from a trapeze on stage. He has been expanding his repertoire into ground skills recently to increase performing opportunities, and would love to share them with you.

Laura Oakley

By day, a civil servant. By night, a hula hoop ninja. Laura aims to blend flow and movement aspects of hoop dance with more structured elements from traditional circus hoop. She is always keen to share new ideas and tricks!

Laura has taught hula hoops to kids and teens at the Christchurch Circus Centre and has taught many workshops to adults in both Wellington and Christchurch. She loves to perform high energy hula hoop routines!

Steph Hobbs

Steph discovered circus in 2013 as a student of the Circus Hub. It was a hobby that quickly turned into a passion, and has seen her travel to many far flung countries in order to further develop her skills and artistry in the discipline. Steph specialises in duo-trapeze, dance trapeze and partner acrobatics. She is currently involved with creating and performing contemporary circus with her company, the Boomtown Okrabats.

Steph is also a registered nurse and certified nutritionist with a special interest in athletes and natural wellness. She has a keen interest in the optimal function of body systems and enjoys bringing this knowledge to her circus and coaching practice.

Abigail Rose

Abigail Rose trained in multiple circus disciplines in New Zealand, discovering a passion for creativity and physical challange. She was trained by Deborah Pope on Swinging Trapeze in New Zealand and then continued her training across Canada to New York USA.

Julia Bromley

Julia is passionate about circus, which she jumped into head first a few years ago. Holding a diploma in circus and dance, a degree in visual arts and a postgraduate diploma in teaching, it is easy to see how being a teacher at the circus hub feels like all her passions rolled into one dream job! Julia has a unique and contemporary approach to performing.

Her’ jam is static trapeze, but she loves teaching all aerial skills, circus fit classes, individuals, children and adults alike. She is excited by the inclusivity of circus, and is heavily involved in both the ‘Rainbow Squad’ and ‘Sage Circus’ classes. “I love to share my passion for circus with others, and I am committed to growing and supporting the circus community in Aotearoa”.

Julia has had to work through several previous injuries to get to the level of performance/fitness she is at. She is knowledgeable in anatomy and injury prevention, and enjoys helping different bodies reach their goals. :-)
