The next Raw Circus Showcase is on 27th October 2018. This is a koha event which we put on every three months for the Wellington community.

Audience numbers are limited, so please arrive in plenty of time for the doors to open at 7pm. The showcase features acts by our students, teachers, and local professionals doing circus arts, and is a wonderfully rewarding way to come support us.

This runs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.

Most of you will know Laila Umeko, one of our home-grown teachers at the Circus Hub who first started here as a Youth Circus student and has been teaching here for nearly 2 years!

Laila will soon be saying her farewells and flying off into the big wide world for three years of further professional circus training, at l'Ecole Superieure des Arts du Cirque, in Belgium.

'Faraway Places' will jam packed with incedible circus and variety performances as we celebration Laila's achievement in the hopes of raising a little money for her travels.

The Night Circus - 21st July 2018 - One night only. Our quarterly RAW Showcase event, has been inspired through the novel, The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern. With 16 incredible performance circus acts so far confirmed, in all the aerial and ground based activities you know you’ll love, by our students, teachers, and local professionals, this is an event you won't want to miss. We're also trying out some new ideas, so this event will feature some delicious sweet foods and drink before the show starts. On Wednesday, 23rd May, the circus community of Wellington was granted an audience with the 15 elected officials of Wellington City Council, as part of their 10 year plan.

We had a slideshow of images playing in the background, showing circus artists around Wellington, and internationally. We had a 10 minute presentation slot. Speaking were Jason, Rosalie, and Imogen. We were also supported during the presentation by Degge, Jackie, and Tanya. With additional development support by Katherine, Mary, Malia, Zane, and many more members of the circus community of Wellington.

Our focus was to show the importance and presence of circus as a regarded performance art. Supported to the same level (as in other countries) as music, theatre and dance.

I’m Jason, from the Circus Hub. This is Rosalie, representing circus at the international stage. And Imogen, speaking for local professional circus artists.

We’re all speaking on behalf of the Wellington circus Industry. We’re passionate, and we would like you to continue to invest in the growth of circus arts in Wellington.

Wellington Circus Trust, trading as the Circus Hub, is a not for profit. It was formed in 2007. The Circus Hub is now NZ’s largest Circus training school.

We currently run 60 circus classes a week for adults and young people.

We have 15 trainers, teaching over 1,500 students each year.

We provide subsidised training facilities for professional circus artists.

4 years ago, Whitireia developed New Zealand’s only, and rapidly growing full-time Diploma programme in circus, who train at the Circus Hub, and will be the future of our industry.

Our ‘Summer School’ brings in professional international artists to teach in NZ.

Whilst our students and staff have gone on to perform and teach around the world, many continue to return to Wellington to live and train.

Last year I know some of you saw 12 of our Circus Hub students and teachers, perform to a sell out audience at the Michael Fowler Center, with Orchestra Wellington.

Circus is a highly accessible art form, and we contribute artists to many of the significant investments around Wellington, including WOW, Weta, CubaDupa, …

Circus continues to grow at an exponential rate in New Zealand. There are strong ties within the national community. We are uniting through the Aotearoa New Zealand Circus Association to progress circus across NZ.

It is imperative that we protect and develop professional training spaces in Wellington, and support the continued growth of this exciting industry.

It’s my privilege to introduce Rosalie from Montreal, a former Cirque du Soleil artist who has taught and performed internationally for over 10 years, who’s been heavily involved in Circus in Wellington for the last 3 years.

Rosalie:

Hello, I would like to give you give you an idea of what the circus industry overseas looks like.

The circus industry works in a very unique way, and travel is a major part of the life of circus professionals.

The typical circus artist travels internationally for their contracts, and comes back to his chosen base city to train and create. Major centres have developed around the world, and they attract circus professionals with their support structures in place. It seems that one city stands out in most countries, and it usually happens around a major circus school. What this means is that it has created over time, an international circuit for travels, and professionals have created strong connections around the world. It gives the circus industry a very unique global quality as it works on a very large scale, where people end knowing each other very well all around the world.

2 of those major centres are Montreal, that many people now consider as the world circus capital, and closer to us, Melbourne.

Both are relatively young and have evolved around their renowned schools, the National circus school of Montreal and the National Institute of Circus Arts.

To give you an idea of the scale it can grow to, the Canadian network En Piste has close to 250 members in the city of Montreal. This includes 170 artists and over 20 companies. From these, 2 of them employ more than 50 people, and one, Cirque du Soleil, almost 1500 people in Montreal alone. Circus there has grown to the point where the arts council, of Montreal, of the province of Quebec, and of Canada, now all recognize circus as its own legitimate art form, to the same level as dance and theatre.

Last year’s edition of the Montreal Circus Festival attracted 437 000 spectators. It is an accessible, versatile, and exciting artform, that has the potential to attract a type of audience that is usually hard to reach. With the right conditions in place, its popularity can explode,

Let me introduce you to Imogen, a local artist who has toured internationally and performed in many of Wellington’s events including for WOW and Weta Workshop. She is now running her circus production company COLOSSAL here in Wellington.

Imogen:

I’m a local and have grown up within the Circus Hub over the past 12 years. The growth in the Wellington circus community over this time has been phenomenal! The more I tour and train internationally the more I realise Wellingtons potential to be the vibrant circus capital, in our corner of the world!

What I love about circus is its versatility. The way it intersects with other artforms, the different environments it thrives in, and it's multidisciplinary nature. From aerials and acrobatics, to juggling and character performance. There is a field for anyone -Making Circus the diverse community that it is.

It’s an exciting time for circus in Wellington. With the strong connections between ANZCA, the Circus Hub, Whitireia’s bachelor course and emerging local companies. We are laying the foundations for a thriving Circus industry and it presents a real opportunity for Wellington.

To attract more international artists. To excite and engage broader Wellington audiences, and to create opportunities for artists to create and work locally - in their own unique voice. A voice which will become distinctive, and something for kiwis to be proud of.

This 10 year plan couldn’t have come at a better time, we want to let you know that we're here, we're working really hard, and we want to be an influential part of Wellington’s creative future.

The same foundations here in Wellington are being laid in Auckland and Christchurch. There will be a strong circus industry in New Zealand, it will look like Melbourne and Montreal. We need to work with you if we want Wellington to remain New Zealand's capital of Circus which i believe will become an integral part of achieving our cities creative goals.

exploration of The Aerial Arts. Experience the sensation and exhilaration of dancing in mid air with skill and precision. We will explore the utilization of the stage as a three dimensional space opening new creative possibilities for your aerial acts.

Aerial Straps Duo:

Come join us intermediate/advanced aerial strap artists and explore different uses of space on stage using aerial straps and safely employing pulley systems to enhance your acts. This workshop is designed for duos, but solo artists can also participate and get some surprising insights about the act creation process. You may even meet your next duos partner. Minimum Intermediate Level Aerials experience.

Swinging Trapeze:

Join me, Marcelo in the swinging trapeze, it is one of most exciting aerial apparatus I’ve trained on. The strive to be one with the trapeze in its tempo makes this the most challenging and engaging acrobatic experience you’ll try. A healthy dose of courage is required to allow the artist to fully experience and express a fluid dance in the sky, floating and flying in smooth synchronized movements. This workshop will explore the basics of swing timing and tricks, and is designed for trapeze artists with intermediate/advanced levels who want to expand their knowledge of the apparatus. Minimum intermediate level Aerials Experience and 16 years of age.

Marcelo Foca and Lyah Gusmão are Brazilian aerialists and founders of the circus troupe, “Trupe Caiu do Céu”. Since 2007 we are creating innovative performances that cross the boundaries of circus, theater and dance. Our new 'Dance Fusion for Circus' class proved so popular that it was fully booked in days. So we've just extended the class to up to 16 students (and both teachers each week).

This class for adults starts on Thursday at 7:30pm, and runs for the next 5 weeks.

"Through this class you will, gain a fundamental understanding of a fusion of ballet and contemporary dance techniques, developed body awareness and flow, and hopefully have fun and a bit of a workout.

The class aims to tie in with aspects of a circus training, giving you tool and elements applicable to all aspects of physicality and performance.

Taught by currently second year contemporary majors studying full time at the New Zealand School of Dance and long term performers. We both have an in depth knowledge of contemporary and ballet technique, as well as a great understanding of physicality and aspects of performance which we believe are applicable to a circus training.

We are taught to use the floor effortlessly, and have full body awareness and flow, as well as developing our individual style and personality as performers."

Maya has recently graduated from the National Institute of Circus Arts Australia where she specialised in aerial ladder, group acrobatics and foot-juggling. Since graduating she has toured to Woodford, Adelaide, Melbourne and Perth Fringe Festivals with her ensemble devised show ‘Out of this World’, a theatrical circus comedy for young audiences. Maya has a lot of acrobatic experience as a base, middle and flyer and is passionate about sharing her knowledge with others. The first Raw Circus of the year is coming!

This time The Circus Hub invites you to dive into the universe of Games and Video Games on Saturday the 14th April 2018. Doors open from 6.30pm, the show starts at 7pm. at the Circus Hub, Newtown. Witness stunning circus performances from the Hub's students, teachers, and local professional artists. We have another incredible line up this show that we're excited to share with you. This show, each performance and transition has taken inspriation from games and video games. This event is again koha, with all monies raised helping support the Circus Hub, and keeping it accessible to the community.

We were informed on Friday that someone who trains at the Hub had just been diagnosed with scabies. Scabies is a skin infection which is mainly transferred by direct skin to skin contact.

As an immediate precaution, the Circus Hub cancelled classes for the rest of the day on Friday and sought professional advice.

We understand that there is a low risk of infection being transferred via equipment and furniture at the Hub.

We therefore did a thorough clean of the Hub on Friday afternoon, which included a deep shampoo of the large blue floor area, disinfection of all scatter mats and crash mats on all sides, disinfection of all the equipment and surfaces that the person is known to have come into contact with and virtually every other piece of equipment around the Hub. All the sofas were also hot shampooed and all the cushions and blankets hot washed.

We have probably done more than necessary, but keeping our staff and students healthy and safe is one of our biggest priorities.

Classes were continued again as normal from Saturday.

Unless you've already been told otherwise, you will not have been in direct contact with the person who has the infection. However, if you show any symptoms of scabies yourself (such as a new and very itchy rash), please seek medical advice.

You can contact the Healthline for free on 0800 611 116, twenty four hours a day seven days a week.

You can also refer to the Ministry of Health website for more information.

Please advise the Circus Hub as soon as you can, if you are diagnosed with scabies, so that we can take action to prevent further infection.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to the people who dropped what they were doing and came to help deep clean the Hub at very short notice – it is very much appreciated.

The Circus Hub

The Composer is a contemporary circus show that follows Franz Cordery as he struggles to put together his composition. It shows the insanity of creation and features circus aerials, acrobatics and live music.

The cast includes a graduate and current student of Wellingtons new performing arts school Te Auaha (previously Whitireia) who regularly train at the Circus Hub.

Sophia is now also one of our teachers at the Circus Hub. Another cast member has also been training at the Circus Hub for a few years.

The students of the Whitireia circus course and we are getting together to say thank you to the Circus Hub, for all our support of their training program.

With Rosita from Cirque Éloize, joining us at the Circus Hub to run a couple of Aerials Workshops, we're excited to share details of the show coming to Wellington.

A Murder in Hubbington - A Murder Mystery Circus Show

The Circus Hub's Performance Programme is celebrating 2 years of wonderful circus craziness! To mark this occasion they are bringing you a unique show, created and performed by current and former students of the programme and two of their trainers.

Join us for an investigation like no other.

Welcome to Hubbington! A quiet and normal town like any other, where townsfolk send their children off to school, get their fine meats from the butcher, attend church on Sunday and visit the library to borrow books. But don’t let appearances fool you! Upon taking a closer look, you might notice that the villagers aren’t as normal as they seem…

It's the Centennial Celebration and the village people are gathering to celebrate the unveiling of a new commemorative statue. Nothing could prepare them for the real surprise when instead of a statue, the bloody dead body of the town mayor is revealed!

Who killed the mayor? Could it be the obvious suspect, his wife? Or the bartender? Perhaps his mistress? Or what about his biggest rival the school teacher?

Never fear! Hubbington’s best (and only) police officer, and the reporter who has everything to prove will both investigate to discover the killer of a mayor who had many enemies…

8th, 9th, and 10th December, from 9pm. Doors open at 8.30pm.

Come to the Circus Hub on the Sunday afternoon, for an entertaining family show.

Rosita Hendry is a Kiwi-Circus Artist performing in Cirkopolis by Cirque Eloize.

Rosita grew up training in gymnastics, music and dance.

From a young age she dreamed of being a circus performer. When she realized that she could amalgamate all three art forms, she finally made the commitment to train full time as a Circus Artist. This in turn lead to her attending National Institute of Circus Arts, Australia graduating with a Diploma in Circus Arts. Montreal was next on the horizon. In 2014 she moved to Canada to train at Ecole Nationale de Cirque, (ENC), where she graduated in June 2017 as a specialist in Aerial Rope and Cyr Wheel. Since then she has gone on to perform with Cirque du Soleil and Cirque Eloize.

Rosita is excited to be back home and looking forward to passing on some of the knowledge she had gleaned during her time overseas.

We are very excited to announce that during her visit here as part of her performance with Cirque Eloise, she's offering a couple of Aerials workshops at the Circus Hub.

* Tuesday 28th November, 1:30pm-3:00pm, Rope and Tissus Workshop, for Advanced students only.

* Wednesday 29th November, 10am-11:30am, Rope and Tissus Workshop, open workshop (but with some prior experience and a reasonable level of fitness)

The price per person is just $65 cash on the day.

Spaces are limited to 8 students per workshop. Pre-booking is essential. Spaces reserved on a first come first served basis.

We’re so grateful to Lucy, who today donated this much loved 2010 iMac desktop computer to the Circus Hub.

It was on our wish list, to help replace the donated PC from a few years ago used in the office, which unfortunately was crashing more times that it was loading.

So this will really help maintain the various admin and marketing aspects of the Circus Hub, moving forward.

If you've seen the various videos of flash mobs around the world, you may appreciate how captivating they can be.

If you'd like to be a part of them, we've just had Holly come into the Hub, asking to get the word out, about dancers and performers wanted for choreographed routines as part of a flashmob group.

You can get involved by heading along to Whitireia , this coming Sunday 22nd October, from 12:30-2pm. This is at 25 Vivian Street, Wellington.

Rehearsals will begin in November, around the same time each Sunday.

The Circus Hub brings you another wonderful evening of entertainment and spooky excitement, this Halloween weekend, on the 28th October 2017.

Enter the world of Cthulu, and witness mesmerising performances from the Hub's students, teachers, and local artists.

This Halloween event features a Victorian era theme. Dress up in your finest or spookiest, with prizes to be won for the best dressed!

Entry is koha, with all monies raised supporting the Hub helping further its aim to inspire passion for the circus arts.

This is looking to be one of our biggest shows yet, with over 30 performers in the ensemble.

Imogen, Zane & Degge were back at the Hub yesterday evening, setting up their newly made portable aerials rig. You’ll be seeing this rig around NZ at various shows and events, including those outdoor events the Circus Hub is involved with too.

'Highlight - Carnival of Lights' is happening this coming Labour Weekend in the Riddiford Gardens, Lower Hutt.

Featuring the talents of many Wellington based Circus Artists. The circus installations and performances have been created and produced by COLOSSAL (you may know better as Imogen, Zane and Degge) and they're so looking forward to seeing it all come to life.

For the last few years, Whitireia has been utilising the Circus Hub to provide a classroom with a difference, to the students of the full time Circus Diploma program.

Some of those students now work directly with the Hub as teachers, and many of them are involved in shows and events around Wellington and New Zealand.

If you'd like to become part of the 2018 intake as part of the new Te Auaha program, still largely taught here at the Circus Hub, Auditions are taking place in a couple of weeks.
